Forgot I’d burned a copy of this to Plex. Had difficulties streaming via the Plex app on the BD player. After doing some reading, seems like there’s not enough memory on the BD player to hold the buffered stream, so it keeps pausing. I switched over to the Roku Ultra and it streamed perfectly fine.
Another von Sternberg/Bancroft film (maybe their first together actually), UNDERWORLD really ushered in the first golden age of gangster films from 28 through the 30s, pre film-noir.
Evelyn Brent is simmers as the reserved moll Feathers and Bancroft is over-the-top excellent as the gangster Bull Weed.
Larry Semon pops up in this too. I first and last saw him as the director of, and playing the Scarecrow in, the 1925 version of THE WIZARD OF OZ.
