Viewing Notes

I want to wholeheartedly hate on this movie but can’t entirely get there. I actually like the other two ridiculous movies in this franchise, and there are some nice characterizations and smaller pieces in this that I really like a lot. As a whole though, it was just too ridiculous for me to enjoy.

I think the thing that trips this one up is that it moves at a more moderate pace, which gives you too much time to actually think about how fucking stupid the plot points are. And they are monumentally stupid.

Another hallmark of the series is subpar digital FX. In this installment they took it to lower, shittier levels, especially noticeable in the hospital battle scenes with all the horribly fake smoke FX. Contrast that to the amazing drone strike FX at the beginning and it’s pretty obvious two different SFX companies were involved here.

Despite all that, I really liked the humanity they attempted to bring to the Bannon character and, even though it’s cliched as shit, the introduction of Bannon’s dad to bring some anti-violence sentiment to the whole thing. Compared to the previous films, in this one Bannon is a lot more reluctant to do violence (even though he still does a lot of violence). I just wish some of the plot points were better written and at least made some attempt to be remotely plausible.

Maybe I’ll change my mind when I eventually revisit this sometime down the road.
