Viewing Notes

Because we were in Seattle for Christmas and a lot of things were closed, we decided to catch this at one of the Seattle International Film Festival’s theaters. The Egyptian is a converted historic Mason’s Lodge and is a pretty nice setup for a one screen movie theater. I really liked it.

We had a pretty good sized crowd. The movie is a masterclass in nervous, tense energy that just never lets up. While I despised Ratner as a character, Sandler played him to manic, unrepentant perfection. This film feels so much like an extension of 1970’s era auteurism while wallowing in all the cheap, gaudy excesses of its own time period.

I really can’t wait to revisit this again at home. I think I’ll like it even more then.
