Overview

A drive-in favorite, this sci-fi classic follows teenagers Steve and his best girl, Jane, as they try to protect their hometown from a gelatinous alien life form that engulfs everything it touches. The first to discover the substance and live to tell about it, Steve and Jane witness the blob destroying an elderly man, then it growing to a terrifying size. But no one else has seen the goo, and policeman Dave refuses to believe the kids without proof.

Viewing Notes

Broke open my new Criterion disc of this and it did not disappoint. The quality is astounding. My favorite scenes in this are the movie theater and when the old-timer pokes the blob with a stick after the meteorite breaks open. So many future sci-fi/horror movies pay homage to this film!

This is another great metaphor for communism horror/sci-fi and really makes me want to revisit the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.

Steve McQueen is an obvious standout in this film. I especially love the scene where the cop pulls him over for drag racing backwards. The extended question and answer between his character and the cop is great.
