A competent, although almost entirely fictional, account of Frank James starting with the death of his brother Jesse, directed by Fritz Lang. Not Lang’s best film by any means, but a decent enough watch mostly due to Henry Fonda as Frank.
There’s an amazing chase scene on horseback through the Rockies that’s pretty cool right up until the horses are intentionally tripped and likely injured to get the falls. Ugh. I really have a difficult time with the animal cruelty in old westerns.
I swear there’s a Carradine in every goddamn movie about the James brothers. John Carradine plays Robert Ford in this one and plays a priest in THE TRUE STORY OF JESSE JAMES. And of course all the Carradine brothers are in THE LONG RIDERS.
