I wanted to like this more than I ended up actually liking it. At the heart of the story is the age-old question of whether violent art is responsible for real violence. RANDOM hedges its bets by providing multiple answers without providing any answers.
After some initially brutal violence, the film stays away from depicting all but the aftermath of most everything else. Not necessarily an issue except that it feels off tonally.
My main issue is with the characters and their depictions. If you want to dip your toes in Fincher SEVEN territory then we’re gonna actually have to care about the characters. At best I was indifferent to most of them (and downright hostile towards one in particular).
The opening credits are great and set a compelling tone which the rest of the film struggles to live up to. Overall well shot as well.
