Viewing Notes

Another from the Cold War Creatures box set from Arrow. This one is pretty boring, which is too bad. It has the setup and a plot worthy of a lot more atmosphere and suspense than it delivers.

Given that it’s a group of white “homesteaders” on the African coast, and that they treat the zombies as non-human others deprived of both their humanity and basic respect, it doesn’t take a genius to conflate the zombies with indigenous Africans trying to protect their natural resources from plunder by white European-American invaders.

Despite all that the cinematography is capable and manages to wring what it can out of the atmospheric sets, even if it is wasted by a lack of effective action or suspense on the part of the plot and actors.

Marjorie Eaton does a great job as Grandmother Peters. One of the artifacts of these amazing restorations is that you can now clearly see details that were never meant to be seen. This is most apparent with Eaton’s wig line and old age makeup. It doesn’t detract any from the film but it’s entirely noticeable.

Of the four (presumably, since I haven’t watched THE WEREWOLF yet), this one seems out of place in that it relies on the supernatural as the basis for the horror rather than science like the other films in the box set.
