Markedly different from a lot of other martial arts films, Rebellious Reign is shot in Taiwan and the unique locations are a refreshing change. As is the political intrigue that drives the story. The actions scenes are sparing in the first two acts, and feel very much like a throwback to late ‘60s Wiuxia films from Shaw Brothers.
Things get crazy in the final act though, with two long, epic fights strung together that move the action into weapons, lots of bloodshed and some great stunt wirework.
The plot isn’t convoluted, but you do need to pay attention due to the large jump in time that takes place, and so you can keep track of who is on which side. I really found myself drawn to the plot but the final action set pieces really push this one up a few notches for me. Would make for a great movie night film!
