Holy shit this is grim and dark and unrelenting. Like a modern noir where even the hero is going to not come out of it well. Also seems to be weirdly fixated on the handover in 1997 even though this came out in 1988. I guess there was a lot of anxiety about that building up even then.
Pat Ha is the real star here though, playing an assassin from the golden triangle who still dresses (hair style included) like it’s the 1960s, which I thought was a nice touch. Really like here style in this.
There’s also a great action sequence involving Yuen Biao escaping via a light pole that is head shaking. You just don’t see that kind of stunt choreography in Hollywood films.
