Pretty much exactly what I expected: a blend of fun kaiju action, “humans are worth fighting for” hopefulness, pointed political satire and light but fun comedy. Really made me want to revisit the original Ultra Q and Ultraman series, which hey, I own so I can totally do that!
The screening was marred by a subpar experience in the theater where the bottom of the screen (where the subtitles are) was blocked by the ungainly and totally unnecessary glass partition on the top of the half wall, made worse by the fact the back row of seats were weirdly far away from said wall. Combined with the fact they projected the widescreen movie at the bottom of the screen instead of in the center for reasons that can only involve incompetence, really lessened the experience. In general, AMC is contributing to the decline of the theater experience by simply not giving a shit anymore. Broken seats, indifferent or even hostile staff, poor projection, the loss of automated masking in most of their theaters, all terrible.
Not to say I don’t still have good experiences in the theater, but honestly its becoming 50/50 at this point. Given that I have a pretty fucking nice home theater setup, it’s no wonder I’ve been going to less movies in theaters. I really started to revisit theaters more at the end of 2022 and I’m hoping to do more of that throughout 2023 if only to get out of the house more often, but this kind of subpar experience is not helping.
