Viewing Notes

Delved back into the Shaw Brothers Volume 2 box set for a pair of films I haven’t seen before, starting with this late animal style classic. Hsiao Hou steals the show here as the titular mad monkey who combines monkey-style kung fu with actual monkey antics. Always great to see Lo Lieh even when he’s the bad guy. The beautiful Kara Wai, who is absent most of the middle of the movie, does get her due with a short martial arts sequence setting up the final showdown.
