The Color of Pomegranates (1969)

Directed by Sergei Parajanov

Drama | History

Overview

The life of the revered 18th-century Armenian poet and musician Sayat-Nova. Portraying events in the life of the artist from childhood up to his death, the movie addresses in particular his relationships with women, including his muse. The production tells Sayat-Nova’s dramatic story by using both his poems and largely still camerawork, creating a work hailed as revolutionary by Mikhail Vartanov.

Viewing Notes

An astoundingly beautiful collection of images that, rather than telling a narrative story (though it does, to a limited extent, do that as well), presents an artistic impression of the Armenian poet Sayat Nova. The original title was supposed to be SAYAT NOVA but the Russian censors decided it wasn’t an authentic representation of the poet’s life and so changed the title and demanded cuts. Once again, fucking censors. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to make art in a draconian environment like the USSR or, today, in Iran.
