Viewing Notes

The second film in the box set and the one everyone has been talking about and anticipating because apparently this thing has been mostly unavailable/lost except through VHS tapes recorded off of TV when it aired a long time ago in Italy; and there was a lot of mystery, only recently cleared up, around who directed the film. I guess there’s a good reason to use an alias when you supported the fascist regime during WWII in Italy.

This is an “old dark house” kind of mystery with some horror overtones, including a weird, wacky seance session. Stylistically it feels like it could have been made during the transition from silents to talkies as it seems to have more in common with silent horror films than anything else. Maybe owing to its lack of a budget. There are times you can see a cable trailing in the dirt behind the actors as they move away off screen, presumably the power cord for the “lanterns” they’re carrying. It’s so weird!

The cinematography is nicely done though and the print is just outstanding, especially once you watch one of the extras that shows a comparison between what has been available until now and this new restoration from the recently discovered camera negative. It’s really astounding.
