I think this is, like the first movie, an amazing, groundbreaking piece of art coupled with powerful storytelling that’s perfectly fit for animation; and that people are so jaded and the mere act of going to a movie is so commoditized that people aren’t going to appreciate it nearly as much as they should.
To be fair, the visual style can be overwhelming. At times I felt like I was being immersed in this visual wave, but instead of fighting against it I just let it flow over and around me and then I really started enjoying it. It really feels like what graffiti, break dancing and hip hop must’ve felt like in New York City when they all first came about.
Visual style aside, I really liked the story a lot. It speaks to some universal themes that I found easy to connect to on multiple levels. If you’ve ever felt like you couldn’t be, or weren’t allowed to be, yourself; if you’ve ever felt like the whole world is saying “this” when you know it’s “that”; if you’ve ever had overly-protective parents who smothered you; if you ever had a falling out with a loved one; if you ever felt like people wouldn’t let you reach your full potential; then you should be able to connect with this movie.
On a less deep level, it’s also just a great comic book movie in that it plays with, and to some extent, subverts the idea of what a hero is. It explores the burdens and expectations that role places on an individual; and what they place upon themselves because that’s what they perceive is expected of them; how a sense of belonging, even for superheros, can lead to a herd mentality and the acceptance of the current state as “just how it is.”
