Viewing Notes

It was great to revisit this amazing film! The last time I saw this was for a movie night at my house back in Batavia, so it’s been 13 years. While I remembered the gist of the story I didn’t remember specific details about it. It was great to be exposed to its visual style again and pick up on so many little things in the background that I probably missed the first time around (like the sunny sky billboard behind the bus when it stops to let the girls off in the countryside).

I also read this as a metaphor representing how the national trauma of war, specifically WWII in this case, continues to get passed down from generation to generation, adversely affecting the younger generations’ lives even though they had no direct involvement.
