This and CRYPT OF THE VAMPIRE are certainly not going to be for everyone, but I actually enjoyed them both more than I thought I would. CASTLE has some beautiful black and white cinematography that makes good use of its locations. The film largely looks and moves along like a throwback ‘30s or ‘40s era Universal horror film. Lee turns in an interesting, almost Nicolas Cage-like, performance as the count of the castle who invites a group of traveling troubadours to entertain him. Donald Sutherland in his feature film debut turns in not one, but two, performances: as a buffoonish captain of the local constabulary; and second as a heavily made up hag who warns the troubadours that death awaits some of them at their destination.
