I love Reeder’s KNIVES AND SKIN and this one is a close second. Everything about her films feels slightly alien and unique despite being grounded in real settings. A lot of attention is paid to lighting (which frankly doesn’t happen enough today even in big budget productions) and the editing is in service to telling the story. Reeder doesn’t hold the viewer’s hand much either. She expects her audience are intelligent enough to figure out the details of what’s happening on screen without having to spoon feed it to them. Silverstone does a great turn as the main character’s aunt who takes her in and guides her through her coming of age of sorts.
There’s a great interview with Reeder about this film on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVLJWoOeSFI.
