Capably shot but good god did I fucking hate Henry Kendall’s Fred Hill character. He’s not supposed to be likable for a decent amount of the film but he’s supposed to have a redemptive arc once he comes to his senses. Instead, all he does is turn back into the same insufferable asshole he was at the beginning of the film before he had money. The humor is mostly humorless and the whole thing reeks of British classism and colonialism (to be fair it was 1931, so both of those things were perfectly acceptable back then). Easily the least favorite of all the Hitchcock films I’ve watched.
The other thing that drove me fucking insane was the foley work. We didn’t need to hear every footstep in every scene. Pretty awful and only forgivable because this was at the advent of the talkie era.
