Viewing Notes

Much like its spiritual brother BLOWBACK: LOVE & DEATH, this mid-90s film is highly influenced by a combination of Leone’s spaghetti westerns and Woo’s heroic bloodshed films. And like BLOWBACK, this Japanese film is set and filmed entirely in the Philippines. I guess American movie makers weren’t the only ones taking advantage of cheap labor and incentives to film in the Philippines.

As fun as BLOWBACK is, this one ups the ante with a plot that involves a group of robbers pulling off a jewelry store heist at the behest of an untrustworthy crime lord, and then running into a hitchhiking couple who are also serial killers. Pretty much everyone is out to get everyone else and no one can be trusted, leading to a fun, twisty thrill ride with over-the-top action scenes full of squibs, explosions and backstabbing. Most of the action takes place in an abandoned cement factory that provides an interesting background for the mayhem.

Again, this really deserves a solid release by a boutique label. Eureka or Arrow would make a great home for this pair of films.
