A silent pastoral comedy with Hitchcock’s attention to detail and use of imagery for deeper meaning, but it feels overly long. Lillian Hall-Davis (who is adorable as ‘Minta the housekeeper) and Gordon Harker (as Churdles Ash the dour, put upon farmhand) give standout performances that help anchor everything. While not my favorite, what really stands out about this is Hitchcock’s ability to clearly convey so much of the comedy and drama without intertitles. As usual, the set design and cinematography are really well done.
I really wish I’d been able to watch more of Hitchcock’s silents when I took the online Hitchcock class from Ball State back in 2017. I’d love to take that class again now that more of his early works are easily available on Blu-ray. They deserve to be watched in as high quality as possible.
