Viewing Notes

Capping off an eclectic evening of movie watching with the first film from Vinegar Syndrome’s René Cardona Jr. Volume One set. It’s past time, since I just got Volume Two in the mail over the weekend. This film has so many subplots in it I wasn’t sure they were all gonna get wrapped up. Unfortunately they do, which draws out the running time for something that should’ve moved at a faster clip. I don’t know where the movie was filmed but there’s a LOT of animals in nature (at least some of which has to have been shot in a zoo) here, way more than you normally see except maybe via stock footage inserts. There’s at least one scene of real animal cruelty here which sucks.

Most of the characters are pretty skeevy and get what’s coming to them one way or another. This feels like Cardona’s TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE as the setting is physically grimy and so are the characters. None of the protagonists can be considered to be “good” and if anything, you’re going to be rooting for the jungle itself to win against the mostly white interlopers.

It’s fun to get to see Stuart Whitman as the lead and he does a great job elevating what would normally be another character actor role into something a little more. Donald Pleasence is mostly lost in this and frankly, his scenes and the whole nazi subplot that went with it could’ve been cut and the film would be none the worse for it.

This may be trash, but it’s my kind of trash! I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the films in both volumes.
