Wrapping up the hard box of Carlos Enrique Taboada films from Vinegar Syndrome with probably the best of the trio. This film is distinctly different from the other two as it’s not horror. It revolves around two incredibly poor lumberjacks who live a hard, humble existence with their wives until a plane crashes in the nearby hills and they make the fateful decision to steal the belongings of the dead passengers as a means of escaping their poverty. Porfirio, the one who wants to transcend his plain “animal” existence, leads the group, step by step, into a moral poverty that ultimately threatens to destroy them all and transform him into the very animal, stricken by greed, he thought he was escaping.
It’s a great story told well anchored by solid performances from the four leads. I’d love to see more films by Taboada.
