Viewing Notes

We had a good screening with a respectfully quiet audience which was nice because it was hard at times to keep up with the subtitles which were often too small to be easily readable.

One thing about Chinese films is they often require you to make connections between things that aren’t spelled out for you. I don’t find it difficult but it can be a jarring experience at times and it requires your full attention.

I don’t know for sure if this is based on a true story (the ending makes it seem that way without directly stating it) but I know there have been some high profile government corruption cases in China over the past decade and I know there’s been a renewed focus on combating corruption within the Communist government there, so maybe?

Pretty weird to see two new Zhang Yimou films in the theater in one year!
