Viewing Notes

For our eighth and final film of Scream, Secret Cinema, Scream! horror marathon, I went back to basics with this fun SMOKIN’ ACES-style action horror. This Project Greenlight film (remember that?) manages to gel comedy beats with crazy action and over-the-top gore into a siege film set in a bar in the middle of nowhere Texas. It pits a menagerie of bar patrons and employees against a handful of violently crazy creatures and doesn’t shy away from getting gooey, goopy and bloody while gleefully killing off characters in a whirlpool of fast-paced anybody-could-be-next violence.

Even though both Jay and I had seen this back after it first came out, I figured it was a great way to keep us awake late at night and end the marathon on a high note.

Though it sometimes tries too hard, for the most part this is a fun, effective and violently gory film that keeps you on your toes and doesn’t overstay its welcome. I was surprised to discover (because Jay told me) that this has two sequels, of apparently diminishing returns. Still, I might track them down at some point and watch them for completeness.

The cast is an eclectic mix of people ranging from Baywatch and Days of Our Lives babe Krista Allen to the great Clu Galagher and punk rock icon Henry Rollins.

This was released by Dimension Extreme and is widely available on Blu-ray, so it was easy to track down for the marathon.
