Viewing Notes

I couldn’t locate my Blu-ray of this earlier in the year when I was filling some gaps in my Hitchcock watching. It turns out it had slid under the mini-fridge in the home theater when a stack of new discs took a tumble a while ago! Oops.

I rescued it this morning and decided that was my hint to watch it. This was better than I was expecting given that it’s more a period melodrama infused with a light mystery. Everything was shot in California, but most of it is interiors and street scenes. There aren’t even any establishing shots of Australia to give it a thin veneer of location shooting.

Bergman, Cotten and Wilding all turn in great performances, with an excellent supporting performance by Margaret Leighton as Milly, the housekeeper.

I think this might leave only MR. AND MRS. SMITH as the only non-silent Hitchcock feature I haven’t watched. It’s not on Blu-ray however.
