Viewing Notes

The oldest known Japanese animation about a luckless buffoon of a samurai trying out his new sword on innocent travelers he happens to come across. This is a cultural reference to the practice of tsujigiri (crossroads-cut). There’s a goldmine of early Japanese anime on Japan’s National Film Archives site. Link to the English version of the site here: https://animation.filmarchives.jp/en/works.
