It’d be easy to mock the fans of the animatronic Showbix Pizza “house band”, The Rock-afire Explosion, except that I can relate to the kind of passion one gets infected with for a bit of consumer nostalgia.
I’m sure people wonder what kind of nut job I am after seeing my collection of Japanese toys, so who am I to point fingers and mock?
Besides, there’s something disarming, and endearing, about the lengths some of these fans have gone to in order to relive a small part of their youth.
The documentary itself is a bit uneven; for instance, I’d have loved to have learned more about what the inventor of The Rock-afire Explosion has been doing in the ensuing 20 years; but it’s still an enjoyable ride.
