I’ve had this movie on my radar for a long time and I’ve owned the Blu-ray from Twilight Time for a while now, so it was finally time to watch it. This is a pretty disturbing film especially for its time. Tuesday Weld turns in a great performance as an innocent high school girl who gets mixed up with Hopkins’ character who has recently been released from a mental institution for committing arson when he was a teenager. The film does a great job playing with stereotypes. Under the surface of the idyllic small-town setting lies the unease and rot of a society starting to come apart at the seams. The problem is no one seems to notice.
This is a nicely compact story that clocks in at a curt 89 minutes and wastes no time getting right into things while still doing a great job of giving the main characters enough depth, history and motivation to propel things forward.
