Too tired to go downstairs and didn’t want to fall asleep in the home theater so I opted to revisit LUZ on Shudder because I wanted to after seeing CUCKOO and because it has a nice, compact 88 minute running time. There are still things that are mystifying about this movie in that Singer doesn’t spoon feed everything to the audience, and CUCKOO is much the same way.
In other aspects though, especially cinematography, I think CUCKOO is a big leap forward in Singer’s creativity as a filmmaker. LUZ is a lot of static shots that don’t always evoke as much as they were meant to; in CUCKOO it feels like the shot compositions are handled much better overall. Probably also better editing.
