Perhaps Lugosi’s best performance outside of DRACULA and easily the best movie featuring both Lugosi and Karloff. Karloff turns in a great performance as the menacing architect Hjalmar Poelzig. The set design is wonderful and probably best described as post-expressionist or German expressionist-lite. It’s obviously influenced by it but combines more modernism into the architecture. The lighting and costuming are also excellent.
A great second film in the marathon as its still family friendly while starting to lean more into horror.
