I’ll always go see a new Ridley Scott film because I’d rather see even a mediocre film by him than a lot of other stuff that comes out these days. That said, I was pretty underwhelmed by this one. It starts off well enough but flounders in the second half. Mainly, it lacks tension. The outcome is never in doubt and so you don’t really get invested in anything or anyone.
Denzel Washington is easily the best thing about this film and it’s great to see him as a bad guy. He looks like he’s having a lot of fun with the role.
I also really like the craftsmanship that went into the costumes and sets. Everything feels lived in and worn and dusty and alive.
