Overview

In Sierra Negra, graverobbers Barraza and Mendoza steal the coffin of Count Karol de Lavud, before heading to a hospital. Barraza sees a medallion upon the coffin’s opening and demands more money from Mendoza. Meanwhile, Marta González, recovering from traumatic events, works as a nurse with Dr. Saldívar. When Barraza removes the wooden stake in order to steal Lavud’s medallion, the vampire returns to life and begins a crime spree, hunting down Marta to marry her.

Viewing Notes

A, weirdly incongruous at times, sequel to EL VAMPIRO with most of the cast coming back to inhabit their roles including the vampire that was killed in the first film. The setting moves to a modern hospital, a theatre, and a wax museum, which are all somehow connected via catacombs.

The hospital looks terribly hokey and brings the production value down, but the theatre proves to be an excellent set with some of the best lighting and cinematography happening in those sequences, including some great star shots.

This one has more humor in it and manages to somewhat hamfistedly blend the traditional vampire plot with aspects of THE WAX MUSEUM and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. While it doesn’t work nearly as well as the first film, the scenes in the theatre are particularly well done and elevate the material a point higher for me. There’s also a great, because it’s not great, vampire transformation scene near the end that’s pretty fun.
