Pretty packed 9:30 PM screening in the Dolby theater at Flatirons. Egger’s version of Count Orlok looked familiar to me and finally I realized he appears to have drawn from one of the vampire characters in Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics as well as Murnau’s original version. Depp and Skarsgård are both excellent. I like that the story centers on Depp’s character rather than Orlok. You can barely recognize Skarsgård and Eggers does well to keep him largely in the shadows and obscured throughout most of the film, except for key moments. It really increases the impact of those scenes. The final shot in the movie is pretty striking.
My only problem was that I suffered through an ADHD-related anxiety attack. Trying to stay seated and focused on the movie was hard given I felt like I was going to explode. I definitely want to see it again.
It’s definitely worth it to seek out a screening in Atmos given it’s Dolby Vision and Atmos graded and does make good use of Atmos and the rumble seats.
Nicolas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are having themselves a good couple of years with their releases in 2023-24.
