Viewing Notes

A very strange drama with some supernatural overtones set in the mountains on the island of Shikoku and involving a formerly aristocratic family that still holds some amount of sway over the local villagers. The villagers also very much believe in the Inugami curse which supposedly passes down through the women of the family and supposedly currently resides in the spinster papermaker who is also shunned for a past incestuous relationship.

This is much more of a drama with some supernatural overtones but it’s a great representation of modern life in Japan in a small village. It blends normal, every day life with centuries old professions and superstitions for an interesting mix of new and old in a current setting.

Yûki Amami is great in the lead role as the spinstress papermaker Miki. Having made paper by hand before it was great to see her papermaking studio and watching her go through the process.
