The description doesn’t do the actual movie justice. It makes it sound like a normal movie with a normal plot, which certainly isn’t the case. I hesitate to classify this as a horror film because it isn’t in the traditional sense. However, other than drama, that genre fits the best I guess. Easy to see why the conservative Polish government banned this in 1972 when it was made as it’s full of political and social criticism cloaked in history. Not an easy watch for many reasons.
The camera moves to such a degree that it feels like the audience has become another character in the film through its lens. Considering the steadicam hadn’t yet been invented, there is some amazing handheld camera work in this that could almost pass as steadicam.
