A beautiful, somewhat elusive film told primarily from the perspective of a young boy from the provinces thrust into the bustling urban life of Shanghai in the 1930s; but also into the political and romantic intrigues swirling around him as he tries to assimilate his new role of servant to the gangster boss’ petulant, unfaithful mistress.
I thought for sure I’d seen this before but nothing about it felt familiar.
