Viewing Notes

While watching this I kept thinking it felt like it was written by a 10 year old boy dreaming up his fantasy movie. I forgot it was written by George R.R. Martin. Maybe he was 10 when he wrote it. The story and dialogue feel pretty pedestrian. Jovovich and Bautista do as much as they can but some of the lines are just silly.

The movie is heavily laden with digital FX which is to be expected, but suffers from that uncanny valley feeling. They just lack that feeling of depth at times that could have been mitigated with the addition of more, or more complex, sets; or maybe just more time spent showing the characters interacting with the environment.

For instance, the nuclear reactor area was really cool looking but aside from the battle with the radiation-warped skeletons we don’t get to spend any other time there. Showing their approach through that massive walled passage in a longer sequence would have allowed us to experience the space more. It would have also helped to build more tension which is my other complaint.

I really liked the cable car (cable bus?) crossing sequence and the werewolf creature. The religious fanatics reminded me of the Paul Bettany sci-fi/horror film PRIEST.

In the end, I think I would have preferred a sequel to MONSTER HUNTER over this.
