I haven’t seen this since just before moving to Colorado, so a long overdue revisit. Not everything in this completely works, but who cares when it looks so goddamn cool and beautiful. This is basically the missing segment of Chungking Express and is very much a representation of the restlessness and detachment of people living in Hong Kong just a few years before the imminent handover to China.
I love the segments with Chan Fai-Hung, who is forced to participate in Kaneshiro’s character’s takeover of various shops at night after they’ve closed for business. Among other things he gets forced into eating a shit ton of ice cream. Pretty funny. Also, my girl Karen Mok! Always happy to see her in a film.
