I haven’t seen this since I was a kid. Astoundingly excellent production design and cinematography elevate this to its well-deserved classic status. The only negative is the outdated sexism baked into the plot. This manages to blend intelligent science fiction with adventure.
The sets, matte paintings, special effects, costumes, cinematography and lighting are all excellent and set a high bar for everything that came after to be judged by. It’s astonishing that this came out in 1956.
