Viewing Notes

A very mediocre follow up to the good, if not great, original. This is dedicated to, and was supposed to star, Richard Burton, reprising his role from the first film but he died before filming started. Edward Fox steps into his place in a rewritten role. The plot is weirdly senseless and so you never get invested in the characters or the outcome. Everyone seems to be going through the motions with the exception of Laurence Olivier who, despite his failing health, manages to turn in a nuanced, humanized portrayal of Hess, the last Nazi alive held in Spandau Prison in West Berlin.
