Miss Bala is a sobering look at how drug violence has permeated and infected every aspect of Mexican culture, as shown through the experiences of a pretty, young Mexican woman whose only ‘crime’ is to want to enter the Miss Baja beauty pageant.
Circumstances beyond her control contrive to put her at the scene of a brutal, public gang slaying and from that point on she becomes a mere pawn in the game between drug warlords and the police state. Telling who is who is the biggest trick of all though.
At first I was a little put off by the fairly static, almost voyeuristic, camera work, but once it became evident what type of story the filmmaker was trying to tell, it made sense.
A good movie, though very depressing.
