Viewing Notes

A pretty dark noir, with no real good guys, though Heston’s character is the less dirty and has some redemptive qualities to him.

Lizabeth Scott, as lounge singer Fran Garland, is a bit of a standout here. She looks like Lauren Bacall if Lauren Bacall had a heroin addiction. By which I mean to say, she’s very attractive, but has that touch of something gone wrong, which plays out in her gaunt features and darkened eyes. Her voice has that Bacall huskiness to it when she sings as well.

Her character is very needy, living up to the dependent woman stereotype still typical for the day. While that might be off-putting in a more modern movie, here it just feels, if not quite natural, at least typical of the time.
