A very intriguing documentary on a series of “tiles” that have been embedded in pavement all over North and South America, including Chicago. Given the subversive nature of the act, I’m really surprised I’ve never heard of the Toynbee Tiles before watching this documentary.
Back in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, a friend and myself were deep into subversive media acts, like pirate radio, localized broadcasting (i.e. walking through a department store and broadcasting a video from a portable transmitter to all the TV screens), audio-visual performances, etc. The Toynbee Tiles would have intrigued us to no end.
Now that I know about them, I’ll have to seek them out when I happen to be in areas that have them, especially Chicago since it’s in my back yard.
