Festival of New Japanese Film
North America’s largest festival of contemporary Japanese cinema returns for its unprecedented 14th edition as an entirely online experience! Featuring a diverse slate of 30 features and 12 shorts—including studio blockbusters, independent productions, documentaries, restored classics, animation and avant-garde works—JAPAN CUTS 2020 offers 14 days of unique access to the best new films from Japan with filmmaker video introductions, live virtual Q&As and panel discussions for audiences across the entire United States.
Since I didn’t have a birthday celebration of any sorts and didn’t do the usual buy myself something I decided to dip into my savings and buy a bundle for this festival which normally you’d have to be in NYC to attend. Given the pandemic circumstances, they went virtual. Sadly passes weren’t as cheap as ChattFilmFest but reasonable given the films. As much as I wanted a All-Access Pass I opted for just the Feature Slate Bundle with 10 films. I later decided to pick up the short films bundle for a buck a short and the Classic Bundle featuring three Tora-san films since there’s no way to view these currently in NA (and b/c they were selected as a starter pack for the final Tora-san film in the features bundle).
