Tough one for me b/c in the end I enjoyed this quite a bit but it left me wondering to who this was targeted. It’s rather dark and gruesome for children yet too slight for adults. I get that it started as an R-rated feature but devolved into something less while still retaining much of its heavier tone.
This really doesn’t look like a $200 million movie. Most of the CG is passable but not terrific or stunning, which is odd considering where film is at w/VFX. The opening 90s style is also very strange.
But for the story, acting and characters I generally like what I saw accepting everything else as merely average. I still think it plays toward a family film but just not for younger children. Lots of death, destruction and mayhem you don’t often see in a kids flick.
It’s unfortunate this will bomb but maybe it will find an audience someday on home video.
