My second film of my second day at SXSW and first film at the Vimeo Theater at the Convention Center. Also lucked out getting a filmmaker guest pass so I didn’t have to pay! Yay!
Solid doc about the rise and fall of Napster and its legacy. Takes all the news bits we’ve seen from that time period and joins them with additional interview footage and new interviews for a captivating and heated look at the advent of the age of digital downloads. Not much new here for anyone was following the story at the time but well crafted w/great editing and scoring.
Was hoping for a little more personality and emotion but was still satisfied with what Alex Winter created. He is clearly passionate about it. Wish I had been at the screening w/Fanning and Parker present for the Q&A. Overall the doc just stirred up all that hatred I had for Hilary Rosen and the RIAA and Metallica. This is definitely a time capsule in a documentary form.
My fourth favorite film of the seven films I saw at SXSW and one def worth viewing if you were part of all that (most everyone I knew at the time was).
