After a sleepy first half (I really was sleepy and the setup for the characters and plot situating was tedious) the last hour does a 180 making for an awesome gangster vs gangster action. But it’s not so much an action film as it is a crime drama. It just offers a few sublime bursts of action.
Hard to imagine a film in which Choi Min-sik stars where he is not the best thing going. He’s good here but the real star is Hwang Jeong-min! Holy shit is he great. The story centers around Lee Jeong-jae’s character; he’s serviceable.
Would have preferred less setup and more of the tension found within the second half. And since the core of this story is ultimately the relationship between the two main mafia “brothers” they should have done more w/that dynamic and really punch it home rather than after the fact. If you see the movie you’ll know what I mean.
