Viewing Notes

Another WH flick for my mini ongoing Hill retrospective, which includes revisiting a lot of his films I haven’t seen in years. This one included. Haven’t seen since a VHS rental back around the time it was released. Enjoyed it then and over the years catching clips occasionally.

I really like Arnold here. More than most of his films. I think portraying a Russian cop works to his stilted acted style as he’s never been known for being a good actor. Also I always remembered this as a buddy comedy. It’s really not a comedy at all (even tho it’s listed as such at IMDb). Sure there are a few one-liners and barbs between Belushi and Schwarzenegger but this is a full on cop thriller.

Not a great film but serviceable and Schwarzenegger is better than usual. Plus I like the on location Chicago shots (and comparing to the stuff that isn’t in Chicago when it’s supposed to be). Wish they had done more to really identify the city better and used more of the city’s attributes. Overall a good revisit.
