Viewing Notes

Solid 7.0 out of 10 for me. Nothing super special about this but everyone and everything seems to fit very adequately for a fine popcorn matinee. The actors, the look, the mystery all works for the most part borrowing from many sources along the way. I don’t have a problem with that.

Much about this movie exudes an old science fiction soul in a glossy package. It harkens back to THX-1138, 2001, Silent Running, et al. in how it fashions the story, alienation and isolation. I appreciated that and it kept me engaged. I can understand why people wouldn’t care much for this because even though it is an “original” story instead of a remake, prequel or sequel, it doesn’t feel original. And there’s not really a sense of foreboding or dread you find in the other examples I cited.

The movie, the story, it just rolls along with little consequence… in that if none of the events we witness were to happen as we see them it won’t really matter in that world. Things could just continue and that’s that. But I’m okay with this. I’m sure others would want and expect more. Granted this movie doesn’t do much to make me want to see it again. And I probably wouldn’t bother to revisit for a long time. But for what it is, it’s perfectly fine with good pacing and emotional beats. Don’t expect much and you may enjoy the ride.

Really happy to see Olga Kurylenko in this. Having not really watched the trailers I had no idea she was in this movie. I think she proves that she’s more than just a pretty face / Bond girl. I like her in The Assassin Next Door as well. Also great to see Zoe Bell in small role.
