Chino (1973)

Directed by John Sturges, Duilio Coletti

Western | Drama

Overview

Chino Valdez is a loner horse breeder living in the old west. Partly a loner by choice, and partly because, being a ‘half-breed’, he finds himself unwelcome almost everywhere he goes. One day, a young runaway named Jimmy shows up at his door looking for work and a roof over his head. Reluctantly, Chino agrees to take him in and teach him the art of raising, breaking and breeding horses, until the pair finally begin to accept each other.

Viewing Notes

Possibly the least “spaghetti western” western I’ve seen. Maybe b/c John Sturges shared the directorial duties. And it’s an fascinating watch because of that. Bronson is his typical too cool for school persona but lightens up to become a father figure to a young boy. Jill Ireland is more comedy relief esp. when you think about why she’s even in this movie. I suspect it was part of the deal.

Not a very good film in the end but fine to see Bronson emote.
